Newport City Strikers LFC started life
as Newport County LFC and was formed in 1991.
Initally an U16 team was established and for the
first few years they played regular friendly matches against other South Wales teams. In the 1994/95 season the girls
completed an historic double. In their first competitive
action they won the South Wales girls U16 and the Welsh Cup, beating the favourites Bangor City on the road to the final.
With
a number of players becoming too old to play at U16 level the decision was made to form a senior team for the 1995/96 season.
The team was entered into the South Wales Celtic League, the League Cup and also the Senior Welsh Cup. Continuing the
trend set by the junior team, they swept all before them and won the domestic treble.
With a number
of the junior side also playing in the senior team, the U16 side struggled to continue their success of the previous season
by failing to defend their double. However, they did manage to win the League Cup in its inaugural season.
1996/97
The season saw the junior team reinstate itself
as Wales finest by completing the treble without losing a single match all season.
The senior team managed to
defend their League title but were knocked out of the Welsh Cup by Barry Town.
1997/98
The senior team decided that in order to play
a higher standard of football they should enter the English League. In their first season over the bridge they clinched another
double, winning the Division League Cup and finishing champions of the 1st Division of the South West Women’s League’
therefore gaining promotion to the Premier Division.
For the first time since their formation the U16 side
failed to win any of the three domestic honours and finished the season without a trophy.
1998/99
The season saw the senior team win its successive
double, gaining promotion to the South West Combination League.
The junior
side failed to win the league Championship, however they had successful cup runs, winning both the League Cup and
Welsh Cup.
1999/00
This season was by far the most exciting in the clubs history. With the club having over 50 girls on
their books, the decision was made to set up an U13 and Senior Reserve team. Both of which would compete in their respective
leagues in South Wales.
The season went very well with the senior team
gaining promotion to the National Southern Division and honours right through the club with no less than 6 trophies gained.
2000/01
At the start of the season trophies were not on
the agenda for the senior first team, but to maint their position in the Southern Premier League. They would hope
to improve in the forth coming season.
Due to the bad weather of last
season it was very difficult for the reserve team to form a real pattern of continued games and by the end of the season only
managed to play 9 games. They remained undefeated all season. A decision was made to follow the first team across the bridge
and play in the National Southern Reserve League.
2001/02
2002/03
2003/04
Cardiff City AFC wanted a womens football
section and having failed in their initial attempt with Cardiff City Ladies, they eventually acquired Merthyr Tydfil Ladies.
Before the start of the season,
the womens section underwent a name change from Merthyr Tydfil to Cardiff City Bluebirds.
After being relegated, the senior
Bluebirds needed to be promoted this season. The Bluebirds worked hard all season but didnt get the results they needed which
meant that they did not gain promotion.
After putting in a good performance in the league, the U16 team went on to win the League
Cup.
2004/2005
The season started
very brightly for all three teams. The senior team managed to get the club into the final of the Welsh Cup, their opponents
were Cardiff City Ladies FC. In a hard fought contest, CCLFC beat Cardiff City Bluebirds 4-1.
Unfortunately the
senior team also narrowly missed out on promotion .
The reserve team managed to win their league. They were unable to gain promotion
because the senior team had failed in their bid to win their league.
The youth team joined the South Wales Womens League and putting in a great
performance, coming 4th.
2005/2006
Cardiff City Football
Club delivered a bombshell to all the players involved with the
club. They said that they could not afford to finance the womens section and would no longer be affiliated with
the teams!!!! They had pulled the teams out of the leagues which meant that they could not play in the English
leagues anymore.
After weeks of talks with the FA, FAW and the English Leagues,
the FA deemed us to be a new club and thus prevented us from playing league football in England, even though the Club
had already made a seamless name change back to Newport City Strikers LFC . This ultimately meant that 99% of the senior
squad left us so that they could maintain the higher level of football in England.
Newport City Strikers LFC continues to field a young team in
the South Wales League and the Welsh Cup.
To be continued......
